  • Programs from DPEP, Sarva Siksha Abhiyan and EGS schemes improved accessibility to the schools and provision of teachers, etc.,

  • Decentralization opened doors to the disadvantaged communities and women to participate in decision making process, planning and monitoring of education in schools

  • The National Policy of Education (1986) indicates that there are 3.4 million children with disabilities in the primary education age group and another 1.4 million in the pre-school age group

  • Low literacy rates and lack of employment opportunities in rural areas contribute to economic deprivation and overall underdeveloped status of women

  • Child marriage practices, lack of women's control over the number of children she has, and an overall dependence on the male members in a generally patriarchal society contributes immensely towards the low social status of women - especially in rural India
