AeA In The News
Resource Mobilisation

Basic Facts

  • Capacity to contribute 60,000 crores per annum

  • Estimated contributions to the give market in India may vary between 1000 - 5000 crores per annum

  • 96% of upper and middle class households in urban India donate to one cause or the other

Beliefs and Principles

The reason to raise funds is multi dimensional. Fundraising is the marketing and sales function of the NGO sector. It's not just about money but about gathering a critical mass of supporters to create a movement. Therefore at AeA we plan to go beyond the charity phase and create interaction between the higher and middle classes with the communities.

Experience

The major source of financial resources till 2004 was through sponsorship mechanism in France. AeA has also been functional in leveraging resources from government bodies and communities.

However to strengthen its ability to work in fuller solidarity with the local NGOs to implement education development projects in backward areas of 12 states that will help universalize elementary education and improve the quality of education, AeA aims to raise indigenous resources primarily in-country resources.

Scope

  • Increased awareness among people on development issues

  • Fast growing Indian economy and increasing presence of big corporates and multi national companies

  • Recognition of role played by NGOs and their inclusion in government programs and schemes

  • There a substantial increase in the give market in India

Strategy

In light of the new strategy for future AeA India will widen it's resource net with diverse sources and multiple donors. The following will be the salient features for resource mobilisation:

  • AeA India would raise funds from a diverse resource base:
    • Private funding - Individuals, corporates, events

    • Institutional funding - INGOs, bi-lateral, multi-lateral agencies

    • Micros - Corporate funding in Paris

Besides the above, AeA would also focus on:

  • Accessing government funds and resources

  • Making contribution from communities an integral part of all the projects

Research and Advocacy

  • Conduct a study on various fundraising efforts by the voluntary sector and the impact of these efforts on the corporate sector, schools and government

  • Collect and collate information on the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programs and Cause Related Marketing (CRM) initiatives

  • Develop a manual for effective resource mobilisation at local level targeted at industries, traders' unions, clubs etc.

  • Take stock of all CSR activities and the extent of their impact with handholding support from Confederation of indian industries (CII) and Federation of indian chambers of commerce and industry (FICCI )

  • Work towards setting up standards for practices and operations as well as benchmark performance measurements for the Corporate Social Resposibility units of various corporates with support from the CII and FICCI

  • Help interfacing between field practitioners and corporates through exchange visits, workshops and seminars

Sectors

  • Extend support to identify sources of funding and mobilize resources for activities related to inclusive education, livelihood education, women's education and empowerment and quality education

  • Help the department mobilize funds from the government (Sarva Siksha Abhiyan, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, National Trust) and corporate sector

Emergencies

  • AeA will continue to explore more funds from diverse sources for AeA India's tsunami rehabilitation initiatives. Capitalising on AeA's experience of mobilising resources and implementing tsunami rehabilitation projects, the resource mobilisation team will evolve a strategy for fund raising in future emergency situations
