AeA's Intervention

AeA started this project with the goal of building the capacities of scheduled castes and scheduled tribes communities in the region to actively take part in sustainable development processes and independently manage their affairs through education.

Objectives

  • To ensure quality education to children in the project area

  • To improve the capacities of Village Education Development Committees

  • To address the educational needs of adolescent girls

  • To integrate disabled children into formal education system

  • To ensure that all disabled avail the government services meant for them

  • To provide livelihood education opportunities for youth

  • To form and strengthen Self Help Groups for women

  • To ensure that all poor women in the project area are supported through Self Help Groups

  • To leverage resources from various sources such as government, NGOs, community and others

Major Accomplishments

  • Multiple activities such as arts and craft, yoga, physical exercise, moral education, health education, holiday camp, education tour, metric mela, kids science forum etc., implemented at school level created interest among children which resulted in increased enrollment, regular attendance and retention of children besides contributed for their learning of various new things

  • Health and personal hygiene of children improved tremendously

  • MLL (Minimum level of learning) has been increased among children

  • Improved participation of community in school development activities and Village Education Development Committees and mobilised education funds to the tune of Rs.201122/-

  • Started 13 Alternative innovative education (AIE) centres at Gudalur and 5 AIE centres at Kotagiri with the support of Sarva Siksha Abhiyan and supported 288 never enrolled and dropout children

  • Additional curriculum on Nilgiris was prepared

  • Promotion of teachers network to ensure quality of education

  • School improvement plan prepared in all 24 schools

  • 84 CWDs received certificates and national ID card and 20 PWDs and 80 parents of CWDs included in SHGS

  • Employability training for youth provided and 99 youth from project area were trained and placed through iLEAD Ooty

  • 112 SHGs were formed in the project area and they participated in school development activities 

Main Activities for 2007

Quality Education

  • Promotion and strengthening of district level VEDC federation

  • Formation and strengthening of panchayat level federation

  • Introduction of local specific curriculum on Nilgiris

  • Promoting bridge course centre to cover non starters through SSA

  • Availing infrastructure facilities to schools through SSA

  • Organizing special camp for adolescent girls

  • Promoting teachers network at block level for resource mobilization for schools

  • Introducing spoken English training to teachers in project intervening school

  • Training of teachers on providing counseling to students and activity based teaching methods

  • Ensuring improved competency level of children by adopting teaching methodologies and materials according to their level

  • Providing counseling service to children and concerned parents

Livelihood Education 

  • Conducting survey and need assessment on existing livelihood opportunities

  • Strengthening of iLEAD centre by introducing other employability trades

  • Promotion of poly houses through SHGs

  • Training to SHGs on farm and off farm activities

  • Promotion of livestock rearing

Inclusive Education

  • Conducting survey at block level to identify all CWDs and PWDs and updating existing database

  • Organizing assessment camps and child specific action plan prepared

  • Organizing workshop at district level for members of teachers’ movement on inclusive education

  • Follow up activities based on child specific action plan

  • Organizing trainings to teachers, volunteers and parents on disability issues

  • Training to PHC, ICDS workers, volunteers on early intervention measures

  • Providing training to PWDs in viable trades through iLEAD

  • Formation and integration of all identified persons and parents of children with disabilities in Self Help Groups

  • Conducting workshop for advocacy on disability issues

  • Resource material for parents, teachers and PWDs on disability issues

Women's Empowerment and Education

  • Formation of SHGs for left out women in the block and participate in school related

  • Training on thrift and credit, government schemes, leadership and group concepts for newly formed SHGs

  • Organizing sensitization programmes on roles in education and gender related issues to SHG federation

  • Skill training to groups on different trades

Resource Mobilisation

  • Organizing events for resource mobilization aiming interface of community with government department and other agencies

  • Organize bankers and government official meet for SHGs and youths

  • Development of proposal for national and international agencies
