AeA's Intervention

AeA started this project to ensure quality and relevant education to adivasi children, empower tribal women, youth and differently abled persons for sustainable livelihood living in and around Nagarahole national park area of Mysore district.

Objectives

  • To create accessibility to basic education to adivasi children living in hadis that do not have any facility to basic education

  • To improve the quality of education

  • To ensure 100% enrollment and retention in government schools

  • To equip the community to manage the affairs related to children's education on their own

  • To preserve cultural identity, traditional wisdom and knowledge of the Adivasi to educate the younger generation

  • To empower women, youth and differently abled people through social and livelihood education

  • To mobilize government resources for tribal sustainable development

Major Accomplishments

Tribal families are taking interest in children's education and nearly 1000 pre-primary and 2000 primary children are provided quality education in 34 project villages

  • Good rapport established with tribal community particularly in Hunsur and H.D.Kote blocks.

  • Successful launching of tribal alternate education programme. Over 600 dropout tribal children were brought back to mainstream education with the support of AeA and education department

  • A total number of 950 children are benefiting from pre schools

  • All Ashram schools were supported to get technical teachers from ITDP through DEED

  • Pedagogy book "Jenunudi Kaliyaku" and ‘Hejjenu’ introduced in all project area schools

  • Child labour rehabilitation school with the support of district administration istarted in DEED campus under the project

  • Village education reports and school improvement plans were prepared for 10 villages

  • Trainings in skill development programme on herbal medicine, natural farming, kitchen gardening, vermi-compost, nursery raising were organized for 150 youth

Main Activities for 2007

Quality Education

  • Strengthening of village education committees and federating them at area level

  • Organizing meetings to interface with PRIs and government at various levels

  • Mainstreaming school dropouts in regular schools

  • Formation of teachers forum and organising trainings

  • Lobbying for infrastructure development in schools

  • Establishment of AIE centres and residential bridge schools

  • Formation and strengthening of clubs

  • Facilitating for children on information collection and documenting their experiences

  • Conducting workshop with government teachers and department staff on Liberate School concept

  • Establishing effective linkages with government departments, other stakeholders and promoting advocacy

Livelihood Education

  • Market survey and updation of data

  • Conducting skill training for 400 youth

  • Organising trainings on natural farming, livestock, vermi-compost, bakasi manure preparation, herbal garden and nursery raising

  • Organising trainings on tribal rights

  • Promotion of income generation activities through bank linkages

Inclusive Education

  • Conducting assessment camps and referral services for specific interventions

  • Developing specific plan for the identified children and persons with disabilities

  • Training to staff and volunteers on inclusive education

  • Organizing training for community workers on disability issues

  • Orienting persons with disabilities, parents of children with disabilities on issues and rights

  • Assisting identified CWDs/PWDs to avail certificates, aids and appliances and other benefits from government sources

Women's Empowerment and Education

  • Strengthening of existing SHGs formed during 2006

  • Formation of women self help groups among left out women in 34 villages

  • Providing trainings on SHG concepts, development concepts, human rights, gender issues, forest rights, bank linkages, government programmes, child care, health, hygiene, leadership, self-rule local institution management and food security

  • Building the capacities of self help groups thereby motivating them to take part in planning village improvement activities

  • Ensuring financial linkages for promotion of income generation activities

Resource Mobilisation

  • Developing proposals for mass education and other government departments

  • Establishing linkages with education department, ITDP, jilla panchayat and grama panchayats

  • Lobbying, advocacy and networking for resources mobilisation for tribal education

  • Capacity building to staff on resource mobilisation

  • Initiating children educational savings in each village
