Background 

Arumbu project was started in the year 2005 in partnership with the Tamil Nadu police. 

Goal 
Ensure that the children, youth and women of tsunami affected areas in Chennai are given equitable and sustainable opportunities for their learning, development and growth.

Objectives 

  • To ensure early child care and education and child development 

  • To equip the women to play a supportive role for strengthening child development activities and participate in development processes 

  • To prepare the coastal communities for disaster management 

  • To evolve Participatory Re-construction plan with communities 

  • To evolve strategies for the sustainability of children's clubs and other initiatives of the project 

  • To strengthen Boys Clubs and promote Girls Clubs

  • To create learning experiences for boys and girls – education, sports, personality development, art and culture

  • Youth development and livelihood education and training

Major Accomplishments

  • Strengthening of Boys Clubs and setting up of Girls Clubs and Child Development Centers

  • Provision of books, furniture, sports materials and teaching learning materials and first aid kits to clubs

  • Training imparted in street theatre, music and dance

  • Awareness and sensitization on various issues – child rights, rights of the disabaled, AIDS, environment

  • Provision of health care services

  • Formation of youth groups
    Formation and strengthening of Women’s Self Help Groups

  • Livelihood education and skill training to youth

  • Relief measures carried out in affected villages during floods

  • Capacity building of community on First Aid and Disaster Management
